How to Dress for the Cold Weather

Dressing up during the cold weather is not always easy for men. No need to worry we are here to give you a few tips on how to go about it. It is possible to look fashionable while at the same time staying warm during cold days. It comes down to layering of clothes in the right order to produce that dope look in the cold weather. In most cases the first intuition during cold days is to go for heavy warm clothes for most people. However, this does not suit for every occasion hence the need to understand how to layer your clothing for every event. Layering has its foundation on the blend fabric. There is a misconception on color combination during cold weather; colors will not keep your body warm but the right fabric combination will.

In layering you start with the slim and lightweight fabric with a body hugging fit for insulation. They tend to retain body heat and maintain body temperature. As you work your way outward you can increase the weight of the fabric depending on how low the temperatures are. The outer garment can have a more relaxed fit. As you work your way out increasing the thickness of the garments it allows for perfect draping without the inner layers inappropriately counterbalanced. The flexibility offered by proper layering easily allows shedding of items if temperatures increase.

Formal

Cold days should be the best to display your sharp taste of attires as you must wear more outfits. Cotton and wool fabrics are always the preferred choices in cold days.

You can start with a t-shirt or undershirt as the base layer followed by a dress shirt on second layer.  On the third layer you can wear a sweater, cardigan, or vest. The fitting should be a bit snugly over the rest of the layers and not necessarily fitting. Sweaters or cardigans should also be light-weight. Then finally do a jacket or a coat on the outside. In summary from bottom to top layer:

  1. T-shirt or undershirt (base layer)
  2. Dress shirt (base layer)
  3. Sweater, cardigan, or vest (middle layer)
  4. Suit jacket (top layer)
  5. Coat (top layer)

Casual

The layering for casual outfit is basically the same only that there are no restrictions on dress code and one can experiment using different outfits.

For example, one can layer a T-shirt, shirt and sweater or shirt, denim jacket and blazer or a thick cardigan over a blazer or light-weight wool sweater. Just keep it simple, do not try to create flashy looks to impress.

Best fabrics to keep you warm in the cold weather

Cotton: Best used as a base or middle layer because it will not keep you as warm as other fabrics as it is absorbent and allows clothes to breath reducing sweat.

Denim: These are best used for middle or top layers and legwear. Jeans are perfect for a casual look and should limited to one layer only.

Leather: Best used as top layers, as they are good in protecting from wind. It can be used as a middle layer if it is a vest.

Wool: Best used as middle or top layer. It is the warmest fabric among all and thin layer of it can keep you warm than thick layers of other fabrics.

Other cold weather accessories include

Hats: keep your head warm and protect it against harsh weather. For casual look knit caps is the go-to option.

Scarves: They add a splash of visual interest in your outfit and keep the neck area warm. Always choose one that stands out against your muted outfit. A bright scurf over a dull coat brings more attention to your face. For casual wear you can experiment with thick-knit scarves but for formal wear just simple wool scarf.

Gloves: if you consider having them on then abide by the following rules

  1. They should protect you from the cold
  2. They shouldn’t be absorbent to moisture like sponges
  3. They should be classy

For formal wear leather gloves stand out as the best, but for casual wear you can go for any type leather or woolen.

An overcoat, like a trench coat can serve as a good cold weather protection if worn as an outer layer in formal set up. Being longer than the blazers provide protection to the legs. When shopping for one ensures it’s a size larger than the suit jacket.

For casual wear one can dress a parka coat lined with fur hoods. It is ideal for windy cold weather and sometimes rain or snow. A duffle coat is another stylish outer coat to keep you warm during cold weather. They are mostly made from wool have a trademark wooden toggle as buttons.

Shoes for cold weather

Boots are the preferred footwear for cold weather.

Ideal cold weather footwear should be able to;

  • Keep your toes from freezing
  • Ensure no water passes through
  • Have good grip by having tractions on the sole.

In formal set ups, the kind of boots to try out include brogue boots, Chelsea boots, and chukka boots.

In casual set ups work boots are more ideal.
